Klaipeda Old Town is occupied by three art installations

2011-08-16

On 23rd of July three installations appeared in three different KCCC spaces and were exhibited there for more then a month. Beata Kozlowska, who arrived from London, exposed her installation titled „Pilgrimage“ in the courtyard of KCCC Exhibition Hall. Irene Anton (Berlin, Germany) presented two installations: the first one − „Key issues“ − is exposed in the KCCC Art&Craft courtyard and the second one − „Intervention invading network – net no. 27“ − is placed in KCCC Exhibition Hall. These two artists have been developing their projects during their stay in KCCC Art residency since early July.

Beata Kozlowska

An installation „Pilgrimage“/ the courtyard of KCCC Exhibition Hall

The work of Polish artist Beata Kozlowska was predominantly influenced by an interesting mixture of historic architecture and industrial part of the port city with its overwhelming cranes, platforms and docks.

As Beata Kozlowska mentioned, she was searching for sources that would help her to create this installation. Usually, the artist uses elements that she found, household items and recycled materials in her artistic practice. Therefore, Beata Kozlowska was astonished when she came across industrial skip in Klaipėda.

Her sculptural installation „Pilgrimage“ consists of several objects made on the basis on the found pieces of furniture, ropes, part-objects assembled in an intuitive and playful way. Geometrical figures predominate in this artwork: cubes, triangles, squares and rectangles form the silhouette of the assemblage. Quasi-geometrical installation is disrupted by playful interventions within the object and the whole installation space.

Irene Anton

An installation „Key issues“/ the KCCC Art&Craft courtyard

„Key issues“ is an artwork consisting of trash materials, found objects and old keys, which were given by a local friend of this German artist. The idea was to uniform all pieces in a way, by painting them in the same orange colour, making a contrast between the facade of KCCC with its greyish-green timber-framing and the objects of this installation. As Irene Anton states, every single piece speaks its own language, intervenes in the geometrical structures of the facade and „alienates“ it by creating a new context. The keys, attached to the objects, are symbols of life issues and difficult situations when one has to find the right „key“ intuitively, making the right and determinant decisions. At the first sight, the objects look like alien substances and disturbing factors. After discovering the keys, passers-by may ask themselves about their meaning, what in an ideal case will initiate a process of reflection.

An installation „Intervention invading network – net no. 27“/ KCCC Exhibition Hall

"Intervention Invading network – net no. 27" is one part of "Intervention Invading network“ cycle. These installations are organically looking networks made of tights and balls. These artworks are giving an impression of a neuronal warp with its synapses. They also represent the internet – big global brain – with its ever-changing connections and links. The network seems to be a strong, but at the same time vulnerable organism which could collapse at any time if just one change were done. Installations „Intervention invading network“ intervene and occupy locations like an excrescences, always adapting and interpreting them in a new way and context by different dynamics and twists.
